Once in a while we get a rare gift when celebrities take a step back from their lives and poke a little fun at themselves. This is the End, coming out in June is the ultimate celebrity cameo movie and Rihanna is going to slap Michael Cera in the face just in the first 30 seconds of the trailer. Nice.
This is the End was written by Seth Rogen (he also directs) and stars Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson at a party at James Franco's house when the apocalypse hits. Also in the film is Jason Segel, Emma Watson, Aziz Ansari, and Paul Rudd among others. You know, the usual crew. Oh and also Judd Apatow isn't even involved. Crazy, I know. I'd like to imagine that this is exactly what a big party at James Franco's house would look like.
I love when stars play themselves, it's like they are real people or something. James Van der Beek basically makes a career out of playing himself in Don't Trust the B- in Apartment 23. He plays post-Dawson's Creek washed up James Van der Beek trying to claw back to fame, which is basically what he is doing by being on the show? What a mindfuck. It's hard to know where the Don't Trust the B- James Van der Beek ends and where the real James Van der Beek begins. Is there even a difference?
He spends his days designing a clothing line, joining the Dancing with the Stars cast, and vying for the 'Sexiest Man Alive' title, which is what washed up stars are doing anyway so at least he is getting a show out of it. If Kathy Griffin gets a reality show, then why not Dawson?
Whenever stars act as themselves they play a tricky little game. They both get to poke fun at the built-up persona the tabloids have created for them but they also solidify in our brains that this is what they actually act like. Case in point: Bruce Willis in a scary rage in Watch What Happens:
Also Ryan Seacrest getting fed up with his job on E! in Knocked Up:
And Megan Fox as a spoiled Hollywood hot girl in The Dictator:
See more stars in action: Neil Patrick Harris in Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle as a horny, drugged-out former child star, Ben Affleck (plus cameos from everyone else in Hollywood) as a really bad actor in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and John Malkovich in a whole movie just about him in Being John Malkovich. Congrats celebrities, an Oscar-winning performance!
