Apparently there is a new craze in Hollywood where someone calls 911 to report a shooting within a celebrity's house but when the cops get there they find nothing. What a great prank!! Yay!! Last night Rihanna's house was the latest victim. Is LA really that boring that people have to start doing prank police calls?
It's called "swatting" because the prank caller is playing a trick on the SWAT or other police enforcement team, but it seems that it should really be called "celebritying" now. It's not the most harmless little prank because you can face serious criminal charges for sending the LAPD to a fake crime scene when they could be running off to some real crime that I am sure is happening somewhere in the city. Because of the high profile address and neighbors, the LAPD is sending scores of cops and it is costing thousands of dollars.
So far swatting victims have been Tom Cruise, Justin Bieber, Clint Eastwood, Paris Hilton, the Kardashians, Chris Brown, and P. Diddy this Tuesday.
The swatting pranks have been going on for almost a year now, since Miley Cyrus's home was swatted back in August when she was still a brunette. Notable swatting incidents included Simon Cowell who was supposedly being held hostage according to the 911 call and Ashton Kutcher who was swatted by a 12 year-old boy.
Anyone who is anyone is getting swatted, but is this about a celebrity obsession? Is this boredom? Is this just taking prank calls to the next level?
Why has this become a thing?
