We are all still in shock after the bombing yesterday's bombing at the Boston Marathon. Today is a very sad day for many people who have relatives or friends at hospitals, and an even sadder day for those who lost their loved ones in such a cruel and senseless act.
The two blasts injured 140 people and took three lives. Though the Boston Police Department and the FBI have been investigating who could have planted the deadly explosives at the finish line, the perpetrator or perpetrators remain at large. The motive of the attack also remains unknown.
Like many others out there, you might be asking yourself why would somebody do such a thing. You might also be wondering how the attackers got through all the security that we assume events like the Boston Marathon offer to participants and spectators. How could this have happened?
The Boston Marathon has been held every year since 1897. In addition to being the world's oldest official marathon, it is also the longest in length. It's famous worldwide, and attracts runners and spectators from across the globe. People run the Boston Marathon for many reasons. Some people run to show that they've overcome some sort of difficulty or obstacle in their life, or to prove their strength and endurance. Some run for a family member who is ill or passed away. In 1975, the challenge of the marathon was extended to people with disabilities, with the addition of a wheelchair division.
Considering how much it means to those who cross the finish line, it is absolutely mind-boggling to think that runners and spectators who came to perform a physical and emotional feat wound up getting wounded, many of them missing body parts, and some of them dead. They ran to pay a tribute to overcoming hard times, and now they are going through their own heartbreaking situations.
What is left for the community and authorities now is to rethink security in large scale events. What could have been done differently that could have avoided this tragedy? Knowing that big public gatherings are the perfect scene for these kinds of terrorist acts, what can be done to assure security to the population?
Our prayers go out to those who are still hospitalized and we hope the families of those who passed away can find comfort. Surely, the feeling of closure will only come once we all know who is responsible for such horrible act, and why.
