I miss the old MTV where there were hours of music videos (and we actually watched music videos) and you could sit back and just watch. VEVO missed the old MTV, too, before it was all Jersey Shore and Teen Mom. In the spirit of minimizing our limitless options in music and entertainment, VEVO has revived the MTV-style video channel in VEVO TV. The online channel, which launched on March 12, features a 24/7 stream of music videos, live performances, and artist interviews in hour-long blocks of different genres. The blocks are curated by actual VEVO staff rather than a computer algorithm like on Pandora.
The Next Web interviewed Michael Cerda, VP of Product & Engineering at VEVO, who said that "the TV channel has been introduced as a way to tackle the 'paradox of choice,' where consumers are overwhelmed by too many media options. Young people of the millennial generation who have never a known a world without the Internet missed the heyday of music video channels."
It is the new way to have continuous music and get introduced to the latest hits, rather than the endless choices of individualized music we have through Spotify, Grooveshark, or Rdio. You can also save a video that is on now to watch later, but that is it for right now. It gives you a schedule and just asks you to tune-in. As I write this, Taylor Swift's "22" is playing on 'VEVO Shuffle' hour. Next is 'Vintage hour' and then 'Global hits' so there is a little something for everyone.
Check it out here and sit back.
