Are you familiar with the reality TV series known as Dance Moms? It takes place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at the Abby Lee Dance Company and follows several young children in their early careers in the dance show business, along with their mothers. Sounds like it would be a great show to watch with the family, right?
Well, depends whose family. It is impossible to go through an episode of Dance Moms without owner Abby Lee Miller making one of her girls cry.
Here's the thing with reality television: once you reach a certain age, you "get it." You get that you have to pull out the dramatics, the over the top behavior in order to keep pulling in the rankings. So sure, Abby and the moms could totally be aware of this. Hey, they're getting the paychecks! However, are these little girls, who are as young as 7 years old, able to grasp that their parents and teacher are playing a role?
A little competition can be healthy, but Dance Moms uses a pyramid ranking that basically makes the kids at the bottom feel like crap. Remember when I spoke about "getting it?" Right. The pyramid is actually something producers came up with, not the dance studio. Again, people want drama.
Oh, that feature in the group Abby tells Chloe about? That doesn't happen. Abby brings in a new girl, who happens to be taller, and she gets to be the focus of the group. Because she is taller, and not necessarily a better dance, is the reason Chloe gets pushed aside. This is typical Abby Lee behavior. She frequently reminds the girls that they're all replaceable, that people are just begging at her door to be on her performance team. Come in 2nd place during a competition? You might as well have come in last.
Abby is so easy to hate. She berates children for messing up a move (which really makes you want to say "Oh yeah, Abby? Let's see your ass do it."), insists that the moms don't know how to raise their own kids, is outwardly rude to anyone who dares have a different opinion of her, has no qualms about making children cry for a paycheck (Anyone who claims this is tough love, I'm calling bullshit), pits parents against parents, kids against kids and OH YEAH, MAKES LITTLE GIRLS CRY ON THE REGULAR.
This could make Abby one of the best Villains on Reality TV right now, or certainly, the easiest the hate on. Season 3 just started this past Tuesday, (you can catch it Tuesdays at 9/8 c PM on Lifetime) so it's not too late to jump in on the action. What say you, Insticators? Is there a better reality villain out there right now?
