Retailers across the nation are frantically prepping to accommodate the wave of shoppers willing to drop $6 billion while hunting for holiday bargains online. Despite Black Friday’s 84-year reputation as the ultimate in-store shopping day, Cyber Monday’s growing popularity has top retailers like Walmart and retail website publishers alike modifying their sites to attract online shoppers this year.
Cyber Monday Comes Early
A retailer trend for this year’s Thanksgiving weekend is promoting “cyber week,” or a week dedicated to providing online deals that traditionally occur on just Cyber Monday. Walmart’s own cyber week jumpstarts their Cyber Monday spirit as early as Black Friday. Alongside hosting their traditional in-store Black Friday specials, Walmart’s online store offers digital deals on holiday wishlist items such as video games and HDTVs.
According to Business Insider, Walmart’s preparation for this sale includes upgrading their online store to carry 23 million products, tripling its product amount since last year. Those added products include coveted merchandise by brands like Michael Kors, UGG and Ray Ban.
Publishers’ Digital To-Do List
For publishers of retail websites, Cyber Monday is a crucial day for monetization. Last year, sales scavengers spent $3.07 billion while online shopping on Cyber Monday -- more than a third of which was captured by Amazon -- beating out the $2.64 billion spent on Black Friday. These insights reflect why Adobe Digital Insights, as well as other statistic gatherers, predict this year’s Cyber Monday will surpass that same revenue by up to 9.4%.
Such potential to enhance website revenue and visitor engagement rates in the closing months of Q4 have retail publishers investing time in preparing for Cyber Monday. Aside from planning sale campaigns, publishers execute activities such as tailoring their digital advertising messages and ensuring their websites will not crash with intense demand.
